Why am I passionate about this?

Growing up in New England, my mother had a set of books that she kept in the living room, more for display than anything else. It was The Works of Edgar Allen Poe. I read them and instantly became hooked on horror. In the seventh grade, I entertained my friends at a sleepover by telling them the mysterious clanking noise (created by the baseboard heater) was the ghost of a woman who had once lived in the farmhouse, forced to cannibalize her ten children during a particularly bad winter. And I’ve been enjoying scaring people ever since.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Hokuloa Road

J. Lincoln Fenn Why did I love this book?

Having lived in Hawaii for a decade, I find a lot of creative treatments splash around in the tourist waters but rarely scratch the surface of the rich and complicated layers that inform the culture. Hand’s attention to detail made me feel like I was knocking the sand off my slippers (flip-flops for you mainlanders) and about to enjoy some home-baked banana bread.

That’s not to say it’s not a flat-out, great, spooky mystery, which it is, and its climactic ending might make you opt for a staycation. One of my creepiest real-life moments was walking on a lava field and having to turn around because I was overcome with the feeling that I should not be there. Hand’s novel captures and amplifies that unnerving chill.

What is this book about?

On a whim, Grady Kendall applies to work as a live-in caretaker for a luxury property in Hawai?i, as far from his small-town Maine life as he can imagine. Within days he's flying out to an estate on remote Hokuloa Road, where he quickly uncovers a dark side to the island's idyllic reputation: it has long been a place where people vanish without a trace.

When a young woman from his flight becomes the next to disappear, Grady is determined-and soon desperate-to figure out what's happened to Jessie, and to all those staring out of the island's "missing" posters. But…

Book cover of The Ruins

Plants, man. Plants. Three thousand-yard stare. In another shining example of ‘Hey, you might want to listen to the locals,’ an intrepid group of young Americans decides to ignore warnings and explore an archeological dig on the Yucatan Peninsula.

What they find makes for not only a grisly horror read that I burned through, but it also shook any sense of complacency I had of our supposed dominion over the forces of nature. And as we exit a global pandemic that was on no one’s bingo card and find ourselves learning new terminology like ‘fire tornado,’ it also feels eerily prescient.

What is this book about?

Craving an adventure to wake them from their lethargic Mexican holiday before they return home, four friends set off in search of one of their own who has travelled to the interior to investigate an archaeological dig in the Mayan ruins.
After a long journey into the jungle, the group come across a partly camouflaged trail and a captivating hillside covered with red flowers. Lured by these, the group move closer until they happen across a gun-toting Mayan horseman who orders them away. In the midst of the confrontation, one of the group steps inadvertently backwards into the flowering vine.…

Book cover of The Troop

J. Lincoln Fenn Why did I love this book?

Alright, so a theme seems to be developing here, but in this case, ‘Don’t mess with nature’ gets a Canadian island treatment (those poor Boy Scouts). And, of course, a storm is coming. And, of course, the communications go out. I was gripped and frankly grossed out by this Stephen King-esque tale.

There are also shades of Frankenstein and Lord of the Flies, and I love a horror novel that asks the question of which monsters are worse—the ones we create or the ones that lurk inside.

'THE TROOP scared the hell out of me, and I couldn't put it down. Not for the faint-hearted' STEPHEN KING

He felt something touch his hand. Which is when he looked down.

For the scouts of Troop 52, three days of camping, hiking and survival lessons on Falstaff Island is as close as they'll get to a proper holiday.

Which was when he saw it.

But when an emaciated figure stumbles into their camp asking for food, the trip takes a horrifying turn. The man is not just hungry, he's sick. Sick in a way they have never seen before.…

Book cover of The Fisherman

J. Lincoln Fenn Why did I love this book?

You don’t have to travel far for very bad things to happen to you, as the main characters in this book discover when they ignore local warnings about fishing in a nearby creek. I consider this a masterwork in any genre, and I’m actually re-reading it right now, even though it kinda broke me the first time.

It’s a Lovecraftian, cosmic horror story that also creates a kind of allegory for grief. Having lost my parents in my late twenties, it felt like a fantastical yet unnervingly accurate reflection of the experience.

What is this book about?

In upstate New York, in the woods around Woodstock, Dutchman's Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. When Abe and Dan, two widowers who have found solace in each other's company and a shared passion for fishing, hear rumors of the Creek, and what might be found there, the remedy to both their losses, they dismiss it as just another fish story. Soon, though, the men find themselves drawn into a tale as deep and old as the Reservoir. It's…

Book cover of The Cabin at the End of the World

J. Lincoln Fenn Why did I love this book?

I love the way Paul Tremblay takes a well-used and seemingly worn-through horror trope (oooh, a cabin in the woods, let’s split up so we can cover more territory), re-invents it, and throws it back in your face with a ‘Ha! Weren’t expecting that, were you?’

He turns the screws on this lovely small family, has no mercy on any of them, and in the process, made me wonder what I would do in an impossible choice kind of situation. The movie was fine, but I greatly enjoyed the book with its moral, ambiguous gray space, and haunting ending.
